The arena is the home to the UBC Thunderbirds men's and women's ice hockey teams. Construction began in April 2006 and was completed in June 2008 — on budget and four months ahead of its originally scheduled completion date. The arena's construction also involved refurbishment of the Father Bauer Arena, which opened in October 1963. The UBC Thunderbird Arena replaced the Father Bauer Arena as the home of the UBC Thunderbirds ice hockey team. On August 21, 2009, the Thunderbird Sports Centre was renamed Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre in honour of Doug Mitchell, an UBC alumnus, lawyer & amateur and professional sport leader. The arena features a 7,200-seat main ice rink along with two other rinks with capacities of 980 and 200. Venue capacity: 6,800 Post-Games Use Following the 2010 Winter Games, the UBC venue will become a recreational and high-performance multi-sport legacy facility. The new training arena will be easily convertible for ice sledge hockey training and competition use. |
